Buffalo Bills Upset Fans with Trade to Kansas City

The Bills traded their 28th overall pick to rival Kansas City last night. With the pick, the Chiefs selected the man who set the record for the fastest 40-yard dash time at the NFL combine ever: wide receiver Xavier Worthy out of Texas.

This move angered Bills Mafia. Many wanted to Bills to draft Worthy because of his explosive speed. After all, he ran a blistering 4.21-second 40-yard dash at the NFL combine. Plus, the Bills NEED wide receivers. They traded away Stefon Diggs, lost Gabe Davis to free agency, and many fans don't have confidence yet in Kahlil Shakir, Justin Shorter, and recently signed Curtis Samuel.

Bills fans essentially accuse the Bills of sabotaging themselves. Many think Worthy is essentially a new version of former Chief and Buffalo Bills heartbreaker Tyreek Hill. By allowing the Chiefs to draft him, instead of the Bills taking him, their logic is you just destroyed your Super Bowl hopes.

That could happen. The thing is, the odds of it happening are just as good as it not happening.

I have nothing against Worthy. I hope he has a great NFL career. Analytics and stats about NFL Draft picks coming in from college are great, but they do not tell the whole story and absolutely can be wrong. See Josh Allen. They do,l however, give you trends and, ultimately, odds. Players with good stats and analytics have better odds of being great than players that don't. Again, the odds being in your favor are still far from a guarantee.

Worthy's Numbers

Yes, he ran a 4.21 40-yard dash, the fastest ever at the NFL combine. In his last season at Texas, he had 75 catches for 1,014 yards with 5 touchdowns.

These are all areas people covet when looking at receivers.

Does this mean Worthy will be bad? No. Does it mean he'll be good? No. Has Chiefs' coach Andy Reid coached a player like this success? Yes, see Tyreek Hill. Hill has MUCH less production in college than Worthy and is a superstar. So it could happen.

Things to consider though: a 4.21 in shorts in a controlled environment is much different than being in pads. Again, this doesn't mean Worthy will fail. It's just that while speed is important, people forget EVERYONE is fast in the NFL. Tyrekk Hill can and has been stopped before, and so will Xavier Worthy.

Should the Bills have taken him? That's a worthy debate for everyone to have. The Bills clearly did not value him in the first round and decided to get an extra pick instead. They could be wrong, but they also could be right. That's the kicker about the NFL Draft: NO ONE really knows.
