Trump Creates Doubt in Passage of Current COVID-19 Stimulus Bill

Just when we thought everything had finally been worked out for a quick passage of the second COVID-19 stimulus package, after months of stalled negations, President Trump is telling Congress to revise the package.  According to CNN, Trump wants to increase the amount of aid money each adult receives to $2,000. It's not clear if he intends for children to receive $2,000 each or not. If he doesn't, the amount of money a family of five, made up of two adults and three children, would receive would be $1,000 more under Trump's plan. Single people or married couples, with no children, would receive the most benefit from Trump's demanded increase.

It's not clear if Trump is implying that he may not sign the $900 billion stimulus package, which has taken months for Congress to finalize, without the changes he is demanding,

I'm asking Congress to amend this bill and increase the ridiculously low $600 to $2000 or $4000 per couple. I'm also asking Congress to immediately get rid of the wasteful and unnecessary items in this legislation or to send me a suitable bill.

Democrats Agree with $2,000 Stimulus Checks, Want Trump to Influence Republicans

Democratic leadership agrees with Trump's demands. Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the House, tweeted,

Republicans repeatedly refused to say what amount the President wanted for direct checks. At last, the President has agreed to $2,000 — Democrats are ready to bring this to the Floor this week by unanimous consent. Let’s do it!

Chuck Schumer, a New York Senator and the Senate Democratic Leader, agrees but wants Trump to use his influence over Republicans to get on board,

We spent months trying to secure $2000 checks but Republicans blocked it. Trump needs to sign the bill to help people and keep the government open and we're glad to pass more aid Americans need. Maybe Trump can finally make himself useful and get Republicans not to block it again.

According to CNN, this Thursday, Christmas Eve, House Democrats will work to pass a bill that increases the stimulus check aid. Even if they are able to pass it, it could stall; the Senate has been the major roadblock in getting a larger stimulus package out of Congress and on Trump's desk.
