There are reports of a massive amount of dead fish floating on the shores of Lake Erie in Western New York.

As we start the Easter and Passover week, families across New York State are taking the next few days to relax and unwind. For many families, that might mean a hike or long walk near the shores of the Great Lakes. Although we are halfway through April, there is still miles and miles of ice on Lake Erie.

But it is not the impressive icebergs that are making headlines this week. It is a multitude of dead fish.

If you are on Nextdoor App or Facebook, you may be seeing some photos of these dead fish.

WHAT ARE THEY SAYING ONLINE?

I was on the NextDoor App this past weekend and dozens of people were weighing in on what the fish are and what may have caused the mass deaths.

The original post mentioned "thousands of dead fish washed up yesterday on shore or were dead under the ice which is now receding". As usual, there were a variety of comments and opinions, many of which were similar about why these fish may have died.

WHAT IS LIKELY HAPPENING?

According to most of what I have read, these are "alewife" fish and can die when the temperatures change drastically in a lake. These are an invasive fish.

"Known to have been present in Lake Ontario in 1873. Possibly native to Lake Ontario. Present in Lake Erie in 1931, Huron in 1933, Michigan in 1949, and Lake Superior in 1954"

These fish are apparently not able to live when the water temps fluctuate to freezing levels.

THIS IS REAL

Yes, this is actually happening and it is not just an online hoax.
