The Buffalo Bills Finalize Their 53-Man Roster For 2024
For many players in the NFL, it all came down to this. Who made a roster, and who was told thank you for your effort today? The Bills have their roster set.
It feels so final to say that a roster is set for the year, but it's not even close. You'll see players getting moved, re-signed, elevated, and have injury designations change all year long. However, for the sake of NFL rules, all teams needed to have their teams cut down to just 53 players before 4pm today (8/27). As of now, they've done that.
The Bills started making cuts early
Just because they had to be down to 53 players at 4pm didn't mean that they had to wait until 4pm to cut them all. The Bills began making cuts as early as Saturday, almost immediately after the last pre-season game of the year. They cut 7 players including a quarterback that they had just signed earlier in the week.
Surprises on the roster
For weeks now, NFL Analysts and local media has been trying to predict who might make that 53-man roster. But until the list comes out, no one can be sure.
Frank Gore Jr. was the highest-graded rookie running back by PFF this pre-season. The Bills waived him. Now, they'll have to see if he can pass waivers to add him back to the practice squad.
Probably one of the biggest surprises came early in the day today as Bills Mafia found out that one of the favorites to be a backup at wide receiver was being cut. Tyrell Shavers had impressed early in camp for the Bills but surprisingly wasn't able to make the team. He was cut today, but you would expect the Bills to try to get him back on their practice squad. Justin Shorter, a 5th round draft pick out of Miami from last year's draft, KJ Hamler, and someone who flashed last year Andy Isabella were also let go.
That will leave the Bills with only 5 wide receivers available on the active roster.
The news that many local Bills fans were waiting for
The Bills informed Lancaster native Joe Andreessen that he has made the 53-man roster.
The Bills only have 2 quarterbacks right now, and only one of them is healthy
With Ben DiNucci being cut early this morning, the Bills are left with only Josh Allen and Mitch Trubisky on the regular roster (for now). Trubisky is currently dealing with a knee injury and might not be available week one. The Bills will have to see who is available after the cuts today and make a move, or hope that DiNucci can be placed back on the practice squad and elevated before week one.
