Yesterday was cutdown day in the NFL.  Thousands of players were released from teams.  But UB students seemed to do pretty well.

It was a huge deal when the Raiders chose Khalil Mack with the 5th overall pick of the NFL Draft in 2014.  It's not every day that you hear Roger Goodell walk to the podium and announce that a player from the University at Buffalo is headed to the NFL.  But he's gone on to have a great career.

Yesterday, the big news was that Joe Andreessen (known now as "Buffalo Joe") had impressed the staff enough in preseason that he was selected to make the 53-man roster of the Buffalo Bills, a team that he'd grown up being a fan of.  His school is just minutes from Highmark Stadium where the Bills play.

Those are just two stories of players who have achieved their dream of playing in the NFL after playing at UB.

There are a ton of different calculations that show the likelihood of becoming a professional football player.  Depending on which study you look at, most of the percentages go between .5% to around 3% of athletes that play Division 1 football making it in the NFL.

In 2024, there are currently 8 players that formerly played at UB that made NFL rosters.  That doesn't count players who have already played in the NFL and either retired or moved on.  That is the number of players who played at UB at one point or another and will now be playing in the NFL.  But they all played at UB before going to the NFL.
