The Buffalo Sabres made a huge announcement on Thursday, and someone very familiar with the Buffalo sports community helped reveal the big news.

After the trade and subsequent retirement of former captain Kyle Okposo (who we were admittingly thrilled to see get a Stanley Cup with the Florida Panthers before he hung up his skates), fans were wondering who would get the job of team captain.

There were plenty of names being thrown around, but one stood out above the rest, and now it looks like that’s the player who will be officially taking over for Okposo.

Rasmus Dahlin Named New Captain Of The Buffalo Sabres

After spending the past two seasons as an alternate captain, the Buffalo Sabres just announced that Rasmus Dahlin will officially wear the “C” for the 2024-25 season, with Alex Tuch, Dylan Cozens, Tage Thompson, and Mattias Saumuelson named as alternates.

The Swedish-born Dahlin, who was the #1 pick in the 2018 NHL draft and finalist for NHL rookie of the year after his first season with the Sabres, is arguably the most dominating player on the team. Dahlin currently leads the Sabres in games, assists, points, power-play points, hits, and blocked shots.

Head coach Lindy Ruff, who is very familiar with the role of captain of the Sabres as he held the title himself from 1986 to 1989, remarked about Dahlin,

“He’s a heck of a model for our players. He looks at every practice as an opportunity to challenge a teammate to get better or himself.”

Josh Allen Narrates Dahlin Announcement Video

As part of the major announcement, the Sabres released a video to commemorate Dahlin’s rise to captain, and it’s narrated by none-other than another favorite Buffalo captain, Bills quarterback Josh Allen

In one part of the moving tribute, we hear Allen say,

“We know you– you’re committed, creative, calculating, captivating, and you care like hell. And trust me, that’s the only way to lead Buffalo, because the people here care just as much.”

The Sabres and Bills are openly very supportive of each other, as players from each team are often seen at one another’s games.
