The biggest culprit for the lake effect snow is always the combination of the warm lake water and the cold air that passes over it. No it does not need to be arctic air. It just needs to be cold enough to turn the moist air to snow and the wind just the right direction to drop FEET of snow in some places in Western and Central New York State.
As of the time this article was published, the lake temps were:
1052 AM EDT Wed Oct 23 2024 The water temperature off Buffalo is 61 degrees.

Lake Ontario temps can change fast. However, Lake Erie seems to hold it's mild water temps for a longer period of time and that is what makes those who forecast the weather pay close attention to the air temps and wind.
We are approaching November and we all know that this spring type of weather will change. The good news is that we don't expect a cold and snowy Halloween this year!!
