There is good news for New York families that rely on SNAP. Republicans are trying to cut assistance to New York families, but extra help is now available through the state. While some people don't believe that people would receive SNAP, it is an important lifeline for many. Millions of New York State residents rely on food stamps, also known as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, each year. According to Hunger Solutions NY,

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) helps 2.8 million New Yorkers, including 851,000 children, put food on the table. SNAP is our nation’s most powerful anti-hunger program. It improves food security, reduces poverty, and leads to better health outcomes, especially among children.

I think we can all agree that any SNAP fraud should be eliminated. Taxpayers shouldn't pay for benefits for those who truly don't need it. Fraud and waste should be cut on all levels, but there are so many elderly, disabled people, and children who need a helping hand.

All Students In New York Public Schools To Get Free Lunch

Summer officially kicked off on Friday, June 20, 2025. With summer comes hunger for many children in New York, since school is out. More than half - 59 percent - of New York public and charter school students are economically disadvantaged. Governor Kathy Hochul and the state legislature approved the 2025-2026 Fiscal Year Budget, which includes $340 million for free lunches.

While many students previously received free lunch, the new plan will provide free breakfast and lunch at school, regardless of a family's income. I often see a lot of "what about me-ism" comments when it comes to any assistance provided here in NY. This change should satisfy those who argue that middle-class New Yorkers are often overlooked.
