School is starting soon in New York State, and with thousands of students heading back, you want to know if the school they are going to is good or not.

Earlier this week, US News and World Report released its annual rankings of public schools in New York State.

US News and World Report used these rankings to rate each of the 1276 schools across the state.

  • College Readiness 30%
  • State Assessment Proficiency 20%
  • State Assessment Performance 20%
  • Underserved Student Performance 10%
  • College Curriculum Breadth 10%
  • Graduation Rate 10%

While most people are talking about the top schools that landed on the list, including Queens High School for the Sciences at York College, High School Math, Science, and Engineering at CCNY, and Stuyvesant High School, we wanted to flip the script.

The Worst-Ranked Public High Schools In New York State

Ontech Charter High School - Syracuse, New York

With a student body of 253 students, a graduation rate of less than 70% put this school near the bottom.

Newcomers High School - Long Island City, New York

Even with a high graduation rate, the lack of college readiness is what lands this school at the bottom of the list.

Crotona International High School - Bronx, New York

This is another school that has a high graduation rate, but a very low college readiness score.
