Buffalo, NY

Buffalo, NY is the 2nd largest city in New York State. It was founded in 1801 and incorporated into a city in 1832. It was first settled in 1789 when an Iroquois Translator was given land by the First Nations’ tribe. There are currently over 255,000 people living in the city. The population of the combined statistical area of Buffalo and its suburbs is over 1.2 million people. The city was named after Buffalo Creek. Buffalo is part of Erie County and is the 2nd largest city in New York State. Nicknames for Buffalo include Queen City, Nickel City, City of Good Neighbors, and the City of Light.

Buffalo sits on the east end of Lake Erie, and just south of Niagara Falls. While it is known for lake-effect snowstorms, it rarely has the most snow in New York State. Buffalo sees all 4 seasons and has warm, dry summers.

There are 2 major professional sports teams in Buffalo. The Buffalo Bills in the NFL and the Buffalo Sabres in the NHL. The Buffalo Bandits of the National Lacrosse League are the 3rd professional sports team.

Buffalo is known for its food, especially Buffalo Wings, Beef on ‘Weck, Butter Lambs, and Sponge Candy to name a few. It is on National Geographic’s “World's Top Ten Food Cities” at number 3.

Buffalo has several large festivals, including the National Buffalo Wing Festival, Allentown Art Festival, the Taste of Buffalo, and Dyngus Day.

The city is considered one of the best-planned cities in the world, not only for its architecture but also its grid layout, which was inspired by Paris. It has a series of interconnected parks with the largest being Delaware Park. There you can find the Buffalo Zoo.

Buffalo has a redeveloping waterfront along Lake Erie and the Erie Canal. Canalside is where you can find outdoor events and concerts in the summer. In the winter there is ice skating and other winter activities.

Buffalo neighborhoods include Allentown, Elmwood Village, Five Points, Black Rock, Hertle Avenue, the Fillmore District, Michigan/Jefferson Avenues, Parkside, Broadway-Fillmore, South Buffalo, Grant Street, and University Heights.

Buffalo is home to several colleges and Universities offering Associate’s, Bachelor’s, Masters and Doctoral degrees. The University at Buffalo is commonly referred to as ‘UB." It is the largest public university in New York State. It is part of the State University of New York (SUNY). Over 32,000 students are enrolled in its 13 colleges. There are 2 campuses: 1 in Amherst and the other in Buffalo. It was founded by President Millard Fillmore in 1846. It features schools for medicine, business, engineering, law, and education. The university participates in Div.1 sports and the MAC conference. The UB mascot is a Bull, and they are known as the UB Bulls.
