WNY Grandparents Face New Scam, Warning

There is a new warning from the Amherst police department and it is about a scam that has been targeting our elder citizens.

There is nothing worse than feeling like or being a victim of one of these scams. Often they seem very real and are very threatening. I was a victim of labor fund fraud a few months ago. Someone was using my information to attempt to get unemployment benefits in New York and a Venmo credit card. In both cases, the scammers were required to complete a series of verification and I was able to stop that from happening. However, there are some who have had thousands of dollars claimed in their name illegitimately.

The advice is that if it sounds like a scam, hang up and call local police. If it is an online scam, do some research before agreeing to or giving any further requested information. It may be a good idea to get an identity lock.
