Buffalo Sabres Rookie Stars In First NHL Game
The Buffalo Sabres picked up an impressive 4-2 win over the Detroit Redwings and it was a rookie who led the team to the victory. Rookie goalie Colten Ellis, playing in his first NHL game with family in the stands, stopped 27 of 29 shots to get the win and earn the first star of the game.
Who Is Colten Ellis?
Ellis was drafted in the 3rd round of the NHL draft in 2019. He has spent the majority of his career in the ECHL and AHL. He was called up by the St. Louis Blues for the playoffs last season but did not appear in any games.
St. Louis put him on waivers on October 5th, and he was claimed the next day by the Buffalo Sabres. He has been practicing and has been the backup to Alex Lyon, who had started the first six games of the season for the Sabres.
Do The Buffalo Sabres Have A Goalie Problem?
This season the Sabres have relied on Alex Lyon and Colten Ellis to mind the net as they wait for Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen to return from injury. UPL was assigned to the AHL with the Rochester Amerks on a conditioning stint this week. He remains on Injured Reserve while on the conditioning stint, and has two weeks in which he can suit up and practice in Rochester before the Sabres then have to reinstate him from IR.
If Lyon and Ellis continue to play well, does UPL fit in the rotation in Buffalo, and what about Devon Levi, who is in Rochester again to start the season?
