[WATCH] This Buffalo Sabres Backup Makes An Unbelievable Save
This will undoubtedly be an NHL Save of the Year candidate.
James Reimer is 36 years old. He's already played for two different teams this season. After starting the year with the Buffalo Sabres, he was waived in an attempt to send him to their AHL affiliate, The Rochester Americans. That didn't work, though. Since he is a veteran, any team can claim him from waivers once he goes on them. The Anaheim Ducks did just that. So, off to the opposite side of the country went Reimer.
Then Anaheim waived again.
The Sabres claimed him and brought him all the way back to Buffalo so they could send struggling backup goalie Devon Levi to Rochester to work on his game, giving Reimer the role on the roster.
What's kind of hilarious and definitely Ironic is that the team immediately went on a three-game West Coast road trip. So, it's back across the country again for Reimer. His airline miles program must be incredible.
One of those three games was against the team that waived him, Anaheim. He didn't play in that one, but the Sabres one. He did play last night for the first time as a Sabre against the San Jose Sharks. A win would sweep the West Coast for the Sabres, something they hadn't done since the mid-1990s. San Jose has plenty of motivation as they retired the great Joe Thornton's number to their rafters before the game.
It didn't matter. The Sabres came back in the third period and won 4-2, sweeping the West Coast and now winning three straight games. They are 7-3 in their last 10 and now third in the Atlantic Division as they try to end an NHL record 13-year playoff drought.
Great goaltending really helped them on this trip. Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen had a 1-0 shutout win against the Los Angeles Kings to open the trip, then allowed only two goals against Anaheim in an Ovtetime win. Reimer continued the trend last night, making an impressive 31 saves, including one that might be the save of the year in the NHL.
The Sharks were looking to go up 3-1 in the game and were pressuring Buffalo when Jame Reimer made this dandy of a save while coming across his crease:

The first part of the save is excellent by itself, but the awareness to turn his glove and come back around like that makes it unbelievable. Being a 36-year-old vet teaches you some tricks of the trade, and he showed it off here.
The Sabres return home for a game against the Minnesota Wild on Wednesday at 7 p.m. Expect to see Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen back in net. The team was without Tage Thompson and Jordan Greenway due to injuries. Thompson will likely return Wednesday after he was very close to playing on the West Coast trip. Greenway is week to week and on IR currently.
