Being A Sports Fan Sucks In Buffalo, New York

The Buffalo Sabres season ended in heartbreak last night as they lost to the Montreal Canadiens in Overtime, and as a life-long sports fan in Buffalo, I knew that it was the only way the season was going to end.

Why Being A Buffalo Sports Fan Sucks

I grew up in West Seneca and spent time living around the country before coming back home in 2018, and one thing that always anchored me here to the 716 was rooting for the Bills and Sabres.

No matter where we lived, I would tell my son Avry that we would always root for the Bills and Sabres. That also meant we would always be losing for a losing team. It is just the way it is for Buffalo sports fans.

The worst part is that our beloved teams don't just lose, they first give you hope and then lose in the most dramatic way.

For the Sabres, it was last night's no-goal in the 3rd period because the ref blew the whistle a little too early. Of course, the Sabres would lose that game in Overtime after that missed call.

That is on par with being a sports fan in Buffalo. The Sabres come back down from 2 goals to tie it, giving hope to all the fans, just to have a call go against the team, and then they lose it in overtime.

For Sabres fans, we will add "Early Whistle" to "Skate in the crease", which is when Brett Hull clearly had a skate in the crease when he scored in the Stanley Cup finals for Dallas, securing the Cup for the Stars.

If you look at the Buffalo Bills, there are plenty of close calls and near misses. We have "Wide Right" and "13 seconds." We have four trips to the Super Bowl with no ring. We have big-name free agents joining the team, but not living up to the hype.

So today if you see a Buffalo Sports fan, give them a high-five and let them know what we all say at the end of EVERY season, "There is always next season."
