The city of Buffalo comes from the name of the creek that ran the city when it was first founded. According to Wikipedia, Buffalo Creek is what brought settlers to the area and when the village was founded, the settlers called it "Buffalo".

Currently, The City of Buffalo is the 2nd largest city in the state of New York which leads to one of its nicknames, the one most people know the city by; "The Queen City"

Also, the residents of Western New York are one of the reasons why the city got another one of its nicknames. The area was always welcoming of immigrants and when bad weather hits the area people go out of their way to help those around them, hence the nickname "The City of Good Neighbors"
