While toilet paper and basic necessities are certainly running low, something else running low that most won't think of until they need it is blood. That holds true in Western New York as well.

Per WKBW and Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz, Erie County is down to only five days of blood left--and that was on Monday the 16th. Unfortunately, blood only has a shelf life of 42 days, so supplies are running dangerously low just about everywhere.

With coronavirus concerns, many of the typical blood drives that help stock blood shelves have been canceled, and there simply aren't enough donors coming forward to make up the difference.

The focus right now is on getting healthy people to donate now so that our entire community prepared as the current pandemic continues to unfold.

"We need folks to know it is safe to donate blood. We need healthy people to donate blood and having a stable blood supply is essential to any disaster preparedness," Amanda Farrell, Director of Donor Recruitment for ConnectLife, said.
