We're only a few days away from the official start of spring, and the improving weather means motorists will have to be prepared to run into traffic delays.

Construction season will be fully upon Western New York soon and in the case of Hamburg and Lackawanna, that time has come on Monday.

According to WIVB, the New York State Department of Transportation has announced that starting today (March 15th), roadwork and lane closures will begin on Route 5 in Hamburg and Lackawanna.

The lane closures will happen between Ridge Road and Route 179 along Route 5 and will be scheduled between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. every day. Lane closures will happen both eastbound and westbound on Route 5 over the course of the next six months. Further travel advisories will be posted as construction progresses.

This is easily the busiest part of Route 5 (after you get off the ramp into Hamburg), and this road desperately needs roadwork. I notice many jagged parts of the road and even potholes on my rides down that stretch of road. The time has come for this roadwork to be done.

Unfortunately, this will also mean traffic delays will be likely here over the next few months, especially during morning and afternoon drive time. Just be prepared to spend a few extra minutes in your car if you travel this way to and from work.
