Buffalo Bills general manager Brandon Beane was very busy on Wednesday. That's an understatement.

The Bills led the NFL in news, as they released five players, re-signed another and brought back two more players as free agents.

Buffalo released Jordan Poyer, Mitch Morse, Siran Neal, Tre'Davious White and Deonte Harty.

White's a June 1st designated release, which means he's free to agree to terms with any team, but the Bills won't get the cap relief until then. This allows White to look elsewhere now and allows the Bills to save even more against the cap.

None of the releases are surprising, except Morse. That one shocked many Bills fans. Poyer and White have been huge pieces to the Bills success since 2017, but at the end of the day, it's a business and tough decisions had to be made.

Poyer is going to be 33 years old and was clearly not the same player last year as a few years ago. White is coming off a torn Achilles tendon, and suffered a torn ACL in 2021. At both players' ages and injury past, it was time to move on and save cap space the Bills desperately needed.

Beane also restructured the contract of edge rusher Von Miller, which saved well over $8 million against the 2024 salary cap.

Going into Wednesday, the Bills were about $41 million over the salary cap. Now, according to Spotrac, the Bills are about $7.6 over the cap.

They still have work to do. The most obvious one is converting Josh Allen's 2024 money to a signing bonus, which clears an additional $23.5 million. That would get the Bills to $16 million in cap space. Perhaps one more extension or restructuring and the Bills would have enough money to sign a handful of free agents and sign their draft picks.

It was evident that Beane did not want to do what the New Orleans Saints have done for years. That's restructure every contract and gradually start each off-season more and more over the salary cap. The Bills do not want to do that every season and decided to bite the bullet and release a few players who were fan-favorites.

As long as you have Josh Allen as your quarterback, the window is never closed.
