Heartbreaking Video Of Highmark Stadium Demolition
We knew the destruction of Highmark Stadium was coming, but for some Bills fans, that doesn't make it any easier to see.
Out with the old and in with the new
The Buffalo Bills have a brand-new, literally shiny stadium. It's got all the bells & whistles that a lot of fans hoped for, and it sits right across the street from the old one. The day they open the gates for the first real game there is going to be historical. It's a day that a lot of fans are rightfully looking forward to.
But it's still hard to watch the old one get taken away by excavators and dump trucks.
Video has been released of the progress being made at the old Highmark
Harry Scull has been a photographer for the Buffalo News for decades. He's spent years taking pictures at some of the biggest stadiums and arenas of some of the biggest names in sports. But it's not just pictures of Josh Allen and other huge names. It has also been fans, college athletes, high school hopefuls, and more.
He's captured some of the biggest moments at that stadium, and yesterday, he shared a video of one of the last moments at that stadium.
Is this what they mean when they talk about a "necessary evil?"
Sometimes undesirable things have to happen for something good to follow. This feels like one of those things. For progress to continue, sometimes you have to say goodbye to things that you loved.
I was one of those athletes who once had the excitement of walking down that tunnel to play a game on that field in high school, and let me tell you, there's nothing like it. We were able to play there in the Section VI championship games both my junior and senior years of high school. We were season ticket holders there for years. We saw some great games there; we saw some bad ones. I watched them retire Bruce Smith's jersey there. I ate chicken wings on the field at Wingfest there and saw Garth Brooks, Luke Combs and George Strait play in that stadium.
That's not just a building or a stadium to me. Those are core memories. And while it's tough to see, I know there will be new ones in the new stadium.
I still call it Rich Stadium at times, and sometimes I call it The Ralph. No matter what you remember it by, it will be missed when it's gone.
Thanks, Harry, for sharing that video. It was tough to watch, but it also gave me a minute to reminisce and remember that feeling of walking down that tunnel as a bright-eyed 17-year-old kid one last time.
