Horrible News For Skiers, Snowmobilers In New York State
Is the winter of 2024 over already? If you look at the forecast for most of New York State, you might think so. There is a big warming trend on the way and it is not great news for those who love snow.
While there has been a good deal of snow in some locations along the Great Lakes, much of New York State has been without snow. In fact, if you take away the lake effect snow, this seasons totals are very low.
As we get ready to start a new month, the forecast is calling for more of the same. In fact, next week, it may feel like spring as some areas in New York State get in the 50 degree range. The snowmobile owners in The Empire State can only dream about getting on a trail at this point. And ski resorts are going to have to rely on the current snow pack and snow making machines.
The snowmobile season is short enough here in New York. But there were some who took advantage of the trails when they were open.
There are few places to ride in New York State that are as good the Tug Hill region. With miles and miles of wide trails and a few feet of lake effect snow, it is the Mecca of snowmobiling in The Empire State.
But when you have thousands of sleds out on a single day, it opens the door for things to go wrong. For one person this week, it was fire that ended the day before it really began. Flames could be seen from far away as this snowmobile was fully engulfed in flames Tuesday morning around 9.

Thankfully, by the time we had arrived, fire crews were on scene and there appeared to be no injuries.
