Black Bears are starting to wake up from their hibernation, and they are hungry. Most black blackers will head into hibernation in the fall and start to wake up and get active in April and May.
Now is the time when they could be the most aggressive and apt to go to places near humans. They are waking up hungry and looking for food.

If the bear notices you but seems uninterested, you should back away slowly; don't turn and run. Also, speak calmly and loudly enough for the bear to hear you.
If the bear notices you and comes towards you, you should make loud claps and yell. Use a deterrent like bear spray if the bear gets aggressive. Also, do not play dead with a black bear. Fight back if the bear attacks.
Do not climb a tree; black bears are good climbers and will follow you up the tree.
