We're officially in December, which means that we are now fully into then holiday spirit.

There are Christmas lights everywhere, holiday goodies in the stores and Christmas music in stores and on the radio.

The good part about all of that holiday cheer is that it transports you into a winter wonderland, no matter where you are in the country or the world; even if you don't normally get a white Christmas.

Here in New York State, we have a better chance of a white Christmas than most places in the United States. For those of us in Western New York and Central New York (near Lake Ontario), an even better chance that that.

For instance, the City of Buffalo has a 59 percent chance to get a white Christmas every year, according to the National Weather Service. That's an inch or more of snow on the ground by Christmas Day.

For the last few years, it has seemed as if we get more rain than snow in December; even some days where temperatures where in the 50's or even 60's, which was the case back on Christmas Eve in 2014.

This December appears to be a much different story.

According to long-range forecasts for the month of December, we will be in a cooler pattern for a majority of the month. Cold and snow is in the forecast for some of New York in the middle of December, and after a brief and minor warm up to the low-to-mid 40's, we get back into the 30's for Christmas, according to AccuWeather.

Rain and snow is in the forecast for Christmas Eve in both Buffalo and Rochester, while the temperature will be cold enough for snow in Syracuse the 24th as well.

For a place like Lake Placid, temperatures will be in the 20's with snow forecasted from December 22-27.

We are still three weeks away from knowing for sure if these major cities in New York State will get a white Christmas, but after the cold air to end November and this long-range forecast in December, it appears we have a better chance this year for snow on Christmas Day.
