Federal Government Shutdown Hits Buffalo Hard
It didn't take long for the troubles that are causing the powers that be in Washington, D.C., to start impacting States across the nation.
As of midnight on Wednesday, October 1, 2025, the Federal Government shut down due to the US Congress's inability to agree on a full federal budget or a temporary budget extender. Because the Federal fiscal year begins on October 1st every year, in the absence of a budget, the government is unable to tax or spend any money. When that happens, all government services essentially grind to a halt.
When that happens, it causes all sorts of disruptions across the nation, but how does that impact places like Buffalo, New York?
Federal Government Shutdown Hurts Cities Like Buffalo & Rochester
One of the biggest things that happens when the Federal Government shuts down is the layoff or furlough of various employees. Some federal employees have to keep working, regardless of the government's status, but none of them are going to be paid. Since the federal purse is slammed shut, the approximately 10,000 federal workers in the Buffalo area are now without any money.

No paychecks mean that rents and mortgages don't get paid, groceries can't be bought, and debt increases because people have to rely on credit cards or short-term/high-interest lenders. Plus, not to mention all of the businesses that contract with the federal government, who won't get paid even though they've provided a service.
Not only are those people out of work, but anyone else who relies on the federal government is now left out in the cold.
Do you receive food stamps, Medicaid, or Social Security? Good luck getting the services you need. Do you have business inside a federal office or courthouse? Well, not anymore, you don't.
Now there is a lot of finger-pointing as to who is to blame for the latest government shutdown, but one thing is clear: the people who are really hurt by this are everyday Americans.
While some politicians will use this as fuel to drive their agenda forward, hopefully, the people we elected to represent us in Washington will start acting like adults and remember that this government is supposed to be for the people.
