Super El Nino's Impact On Winter Weather In New York State

We are in the middle of summer here in Western New York, but it's never too early to think about winter. You just never know when we could see lake-effect snow, ot temperatures hit the high 90s. The good news, at least for people who don't love snow, is that this winter could be a mild one in the 716.

Mild Winter Expected In Western New York

Right now, a lot of weather people and scientists are talking about an El Niño and "Super" El Niño for the winter. If that ends up being the case, that could cause a very mild winter in Western New York.

The latest forecast from NOAA is that there is a 95% chance of an El Niño for September through December, with the probability dropping only to 90% through January. El Niños usually mean a mild winter, and the stronger the El Niño, the milder the winter weather.

If this year goes along with those trends, we could be in for a warmer and drier-than-normal winter. For someone like me, who lives in the Southtowns and the "Snowbelt" off Lake Erie, the less snow the better! It will help save my back and knees from all that shoveling.
