The Erie Canal was the most important waterway for traffic, travel and the economy in the United States when it was built. Of course, Buffalo was one of the most important cities because of the Canal back then as well.

Proposed in 1808 and completed in 1825, the Canal links the waters of Lake Erie in the west to the Hudson River in the east. An engineering marvel when it was built, some called it the Eighth Wonder of the World.

The Canal and the blue collar workers on it, influenced the song 'Erie Canal (Low Bridge)' written by Thomas S. Allen and made famous, most recently, all over again by Bruce Springsteen. The song is also known as "Fifteen Years on the Erie Canal", "Fifteen Miles on the Erie Canal", "Erie Canal Song", and"Mule Named Sal".
