That county would be Erie County. Yes, at last check, according to the website worldpopulationreview.com, Erie County's population in 2021 was 916,672.

That is down just over 1000 people from 2020 and is about 200,000 people fewer than the highest population of 1,113,490 which was recorded in 1970.

But with just over 900,000 people living in the county, Erie County is larger than six other US states. Yes, the WHOLE state.

Erie County is also larger than the District of Columbia, which isn't considered a state or city, but its own unique district according to the US Constitution. Washington, DC was formed to be an area of  "not exceeding 10 Miles square," would "become the Seat of the Government of the United States" as per the US Constitution.

So why is Erie County bigger than six other states? It has to do with location and resources. The City of Buffalo and Erie County became a major shipping hub when the Erie Canal was constructed and because of the access to both Lake Erie and Lake Ontario, Erie County was a place people could come and find work, build a business, and a lot of immigrants from Europe settled here during and after World War II.

In the 1970s Buffalo and Erie County had lots of well-paying manufacturing jobs with the likes of GM, Ford, and Bethelem Steel calling Erie County home. Some of those jobs have left and some have been replaced with jobs in Hospitals, banking, and technology.

Now there has been a slight decrease in population since 2010 when the population of 919,152 but overall the level of the population has remained level in the county.
