New York Law Blocks Clever Robo Call Strategy

Governor Hochul signed a new law that will build on federal action to better protect New Yorkers who are tired of robo calls.

There’s nothing more annoying than endless calls and texts all day from people that you don’t know. I am in a bunch of group text messages and there are definitely run numbers I don’t recognize. But nothing is more frustrating than calls that you get with only a person on the other end trying to sell you something.

That is about to change in Western New York and New York State.

Governor Hochul signed a new law that will build on federal action to better protect New Yorkers who are tired of robo calls.

“This legislation will enable telecom companies to prevent these calls from coming in in the first place, as well as empower our state government to ensure that voice service providers are validating who is making these calls so enforcement action can be taken against bad actors.”

The strategy lately has been to call with a local number and then when they leave a voicemail, they often give you a one 800 number or some random other number from out of state to call them back on. Whether it is a empty threat about going to jail for an unpaid parking ticket, or calling about the warranty on your vehicle, robo calls have to be the biggest annoyance when it comes to having a phone.

If you sell some thing on Facebook marketplace or are you waiting for a call from a doctor's office or some thing and that 716 area code pops up you are inclined to answer it just in case there’s something important on the other line. Once you answer the call, boom it is a phony robo call. Hopefully this new law will at least end some of that nonsense and we can all get back to just flipping through Facebook Instagram TickTock and Twitter on our phones.
