For those who wanted a white Christmas in New York State or many parts of Western New York, they were sorely disappointed, as it was a more mild Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

However, January has been vastly different; and more along the lines of what we expect for the winter season.

Temperatures in Western New York and across the state will be bitterly cold the next couple of days, and tonight will feature temperatures in the teens and single digits.

Here in Western New York, the southern tier in Cattaraugus and Chautauqua counties might receive 6-8 inches of snow, according to thee National Weather Service, while Buffalo will get 1-2 inches of snow.

That pales in comparison to regions off of Lake Ontario.

A Lake Effect Snow Warning was issued for Lewis and Oswego counties until 1 am on January 11th.

At least a foot of snow could fall, and potentially up to 2 and a half feet of snow in some parts. 24-30 inches is the forecasted snow totals near Pulaski and Oswego.

Those snow totals are just for today and tonight as well, which means heavy lake effect snow in a short period of time. Driving conditions will be awful for those regions and if you do not have to travel, it's best to stay inside until the snow stops.

4-6 inches of snow could fall in the Rochester region as well, as it will be a snowy Monday night for a large portion of the state -- those off Lake Erie and Lake Ontario.
