Will Odell Beckham Sign With The Buffalo Bills?
The Miami Dolphins are releasing the once-celebrated receiver. Will the Bills try to bring him in?
Odell Beckham Jr. was once the biggest star among wide receivers in the NFL. His amazing catches happened weekly while he played for the New York Giants. Defenses feared him. Fantasy Football players had to have him.
Time changes things. As does playing for the Cleveland Browns.
Beckham was famously traded to the Cleveland Browns in 2019 along with Olivier Vernon in exchange for Jabrill Peppers, Kevin Zeitler, a first and a third-round pick. His first season in Cleveland was not bad, but in 2020, he suffered an ACL tear. He has never been the same since that injury. In fact, since 2020, his best season was last year with Baltimore, where he only had 535 yards receiving.
This offseason, he signed with the Miami Dolphins, hoping to get his career back on track.
That failed.
The Miami Dolphins Are Releasing Odell Beckham Jr.
Despite playing a lot with star Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa on a potent Miami offense, he has only nine catches for 55 yards. Granted, the Dolphins were missing Tua for a large chunk of the season; however, since he has been back and Miami has been on a tear, OBJ hasn't found more productivity.
As a result, the Dolphins and Beckham are parting ways.
Beckham will be placed on waivers, which means teams will have the opportunity to claim him. If multiple teams claim him, the team with the highest priority, which is determined by the draft, wins the player.
Will Odell Beckham Sign With The Buffalo Bills?
Before discussing whether it's a good or bad idea, you first have to think about money. How much will OBJ cost the Bills, who are tight on the salary cap? It turns out that won't be an issue for any team:
Next is where you have to ask if the Bills SHOULD claim him. Objectively, this is a player who has struggled since his ACL injury and has been on multiple teams. That doesn't mean he can't be as valuable as depth, but it does mean you have to make room for him on your roster when if you claim and win him.
Should the Bills Sign Odell Beckham?
In my opinion, they should not claim him off waivers. The Bills offense is good as is. They don't need to claim OBJ and then be forced to cut someone off their roster. There is no desperation to add a player that may have baggage. The offense has not been the issue for this team, and it doesn't need to be rattled.
What I would do if I were them and the Bills wanted to add him? If OBJ does not get claimed and he clears waivers, offer him a spot on the practice squad. Before you laugh at that idea, that's a common thing these days, even for higher-profile players. If he wants better opportunities to win, which the Bills provide, then a practice squad spot might be good for the Bills and for Beckham. That's about as much of a commitment as I'd make, personally, to a player like him at this stage of his career if I were the Bills.
If he just wants to catch more passes, then the Bills are not the answer. In this case, ironically, maybe he should go back to the Giants.
