The last few days haven't exactly been days that I will cherish as time goes by. In fact, it's been one of the most challenging times of my entire life.

I was recently the victim of batter that took place in Western New York.

When say the word "battery," it can mean a multitude of different things. It's an overarching term given for events that can range in different levels of seriousness from physical contact or harm.

Mine was from an unsuspecting punch that I didn't know would be delivered.

For confidentiality, I will not go into specifics, however, what's a shame is I did not engage at all in any physical confrontation, nor did I wish to engage in a physical altercation.

The aftermath involved a police report that hasn't resulted in much of anything since the person who did this got away, but the injuries sustained have been the bigger concern over the last few days.

I've been dealing with what is called a "tripod fracture."

Before this, I had never heard of it. It's the fracture in three sections of your face, which include the zygomatic arch (cheekbone), inferior orbital rim and maxillary sinus walls, along with the lateral orbital rim.

What's a small relief is surgery isn't needed since mine was a non-displaced fracture -- meaning, none of the fractures are out of alignment and can heal on their own. The only thing is the doctor who treated me said I will have to live with a "flatter" cheekbone once it heals, which can be treated with surgery but isn't necessary.

However, headaches were a major problem the first few days after the injury, and just not feeling right, for lack of a better term.

It's difficult to describe. It was just a "fog." Nausea was another symptom and it's taken a while to get back to normal in terms of the neurological stuff. I also have numbness in the upper gum on one side of my face, which I'm unsure of when that will go away.

Two lessons I've learned because of this are a simple fact that sometimes, trouble can find you even if you don't seek it out. I wish I could go back and just remove myself from the situation.

Another is head injuries are extremely serious. I had never (to my knowledge) had a concussion before and had never fractured any bone other than a finger before this. The signs and symptoms of head injuries seem to walk a fine line since there are just so many variables (facial fractures, sinus problems, headaches, nausea, ringing ears, numbness, memory loss, etc).

You start to think about your family, friends, work, and just quality of life that could be impacted by an injury like this and that's what is the most concern. I'll be fine and I'm getting exponentially better as time passes, but if you ever suspect you have a head injury or have been a victim of an assault or attack, get medical help immediately.

I can't thank the doctors enough who treated me immediately. Thank you to the ER doctor, my primary, and the specialist who treated me with the utmost professionalism and treatment I needed.
