Bills fans have been yearning for a Super Bowl title since the AFL and NFL merged in 1966. We’ve been in the big game 4 times, with no need to revisit the well-known history. Bills fans, Buffalo sports fans in general, are a tortured group that has had so many second-place finishes. That’s not the only pain point, though. There have been SO MANY absolutely horrendous teams as well. A 17-year playoff drought for the Bills lasting most of this century. A 13-year drought is currently ongoing for the Sabres: the longest active in pro sports and longest ever in the NHL. Bills fans had a lot of pain in the 70s and 80s. The Sabres had their struggles in the mid to late 80s, too.

Thank God for the Buffalo Bandits who are multiple-time world champions.

That doesn’t scratch the itch, though, for most. The Sabres winning it all would be huge. The Bills winning it all would be everything.

And why not? It’s the biggest league in the world (next to soccer, arguably). Winning a Super Bowl is a type of large-scale validation that would have everyone talkin’ proud for years to come. There are people who really believe the city and community itself will completely change and be fixed if the Bills win it all. Let’s be honest, that’s not what would happen. However, it would be an injection of unity, positivity, and hope into this community that is so desperately needed.

That’s why I want this to be the year for the Bills.

Of course, we want every year to be it. It’s not like I sat here last season and said, “I don’t want it this year.” They’ve had good runs and teams but haven’t made it to the Super Bowl yet with Josh Allen, and while I would have given a lot to see any of these previous teams win it all, this one is THE team I want to win it all.

The negativity from loud-mouth NFL pundits about Josh Allen, in particular, is why.

EVERYONE is writing this team off as being in a rebuild. They are trashing Josh Allen, saying he has no weapons and will take a huge drop in production, let alone claiming he is overrated; a ridiculous statement. They claim the defense, as well as the Bills offensive line, are depleted greatly with the players they lost this offseason. Many are picking the Jets or Dolphins to win the division, as well as picking the Bills to miss the playoffs.

It’s enrages me. Not because all the bad stuff can’t happen, but because the data rally does not suggest such a drop-off.

It does set up the perfect story, though.

The forgotten, discarded team. The QB so many have disrespected. The fans that deserve it more than any other.

For Josh, the MVP is literally laid out before him. The way the talking heads are painting the Bills receivers out to be a Division 2 college group, when they aren’t, has teed him up perfectly to “rise above” and win the MVP this season. That’d be great, but I want it all.

I want to shove the disrespect back in the faces of the haters in a year where they think our team is dead in the water and our QB is hopeless when, factually, there is no reason to actually think that.

It’s a perfect NFL story. Make it happen, Bills.
