Police Warning of Amazon Prime Scam Targeting WNY Residents

Amazon is very popular during the holidays and the weeks leading up to Thanksgiving for that matter, but with Amazon shopping also bring scammers attempting to take advantage of the online shopping.

According to WIVB, Cheektowaga Police are warning residents of a local scam that targets Amazon Prime users.

Here's how it works:

You receive a spam call from a scammer claiming to be from Amazon Prime Security.

Scammers will then ask you to purchase gift cards, then you provide them with the gift card numbers in exchange for "securing" your account...yup, it's a scam.

Apparently, people of all ages have fallen for this one according to Cheektowaga Police.

Remember that no business will ask you for payment in gift cards and scammers will often seem like a situation is urgent, to pressure you into giving out personal information. Never give out credit card numbers, social security numbers or any other personal information over the phone, text or email.

If you suspect a phone call is a scammer, hang up and report the incident.
