Rick Jeanneret and Ryan Miller Cried Together After Game 7 Loss in 2006 [VIDEO]

Tonight is a very special night for the Buffalo Sabres and their fans. That’s because it’s RJ night at KeyBank Center, as the Sabres honor the career of legendary play-by-play man Rick Jeanneret.

The game tonight vs. the Nashville Predators is sold out and the Sabres are urging fans to be in their seats by 6:40 pm to witness the ceremony.

Over the past 50 years, there have been countless calls by Rick. May Day, Jimmy Hoffa, Scary Good, etc. One memory fans might want to ignore though is the painful game 7 loss in the Eastern Conference Final to the Carolina Hurricanes in 2006.

The 2005-2006 Sabres were special. The year after the lockout and the team was built for the new, wide open NHL. By the new year, the Sabres had found its stride and were the hottest team in hockey. Many fans believed the Sabres were the best team in the playoffs.

Unfortunately, Buffalo lost four of its top six defenseman to injury by game 7, including a freak staph infection to Jay McKee. Toni Lydman and Brian Campbell were the only healthy starting D-men left.

After the loss, Rick Jeanneret, who was interviewed by Matt Bove of WKBW, said he went down to the locker room after the loss that night. He shook every player’s hand and when he came to Ryan Miller, they both broke down in tears.

That’s incredible. Lindy Ruff’s laughing at no defenseman left was amazing too. They KNEW they were the best team left and had the Stanley Cup stolen by freak injuries. It’s the only game, Bills or Sabres, I’ve cried after watching.
