Rick Springfield Covers Fleetwood Mac
Springfield Mac, anyone?
The A.V. Club's ongoing Undercover series features artists covering unlikely songs, and for their latest installment, they've pulled off a particularly unexpected feat: lining up Rick Springfield to cover the Fleetwood Mac classic 'Oh Well.' It's an intriguing choice, but as Springfield explains in the video above, the song has been a part of his repertoire for quite some time.
Armed with an acoustic guitar, Springfield delivered his cover during a backyard concert, prefacing his performance by telling his audience that he played 'Oh Well' during his late-'60s stint in the Australian band Zoot. Saying the group added the song to its set during a beach tour, Springfield pointed out that while Fleetwood Mac is from the U.K., where it's never sunny, this song still reminds him of sun and sand.
Springfield -- who celebrates the release of his 'Affair of the Heart' documentary on DVD today (July 16) -- is no stranger to covers; in 2005, he recorded 'The Day After Yesterday,' a collection of his renditions of other artists' songs, including Foreigner's 'Waiting for a Girl Like You,' Gerry Rafferty's 'Baker Street' and John Lennon's 'Imagine.'
