Governor Andrew Cuomo announced last week that state-owned beaches would be open for Memorial Day Weekend, but according to WIVB, Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz said that most Erie County Beaches won't be open at all this weekend.

Poloncarz says County beaches typically don't open until June anyway and this year will be no different. Opening dates of Erie County beaches could be pushed back because of the pandemic.

However, three state-owned beaches will be open this weekend:

  • Woodlawn
  • Beaver Island
  • Evangola

Local law enforcement and the parks department will be patrolling beaches that are closed to make sure people are following closures.

According to WGRZ, beaches that are open are only allowed at 50 percent capacity and must wear masks or face coverings when social distancing isn't possible.

Picnic tables, playgrounds and concession stands will be closed. No contact sports or group activities will be allowed, either.

If you're planning on stopping at the beach this weekend, the water might be a bit cold but the weather looks to mostly cooperate.
