Without government aid or big charitable donations, two (usually) well-loved Canalside museums are set to go into the red in 2021.

The Buffalo News reports The Ralph C. Wilson Explore & More Children's Museum and the Buffalo and Erie County Naval & Military Park are running out of money.

"We're desperate at this point, because once I get to March, I run out of cash and that is a very scary place to be," Michelle Urbanczyk, Explore & More's CEO said to the Buffalo News.

The News reports "98% of the children's museum's revenues and 97% of the naval park's come from ticket sales, memberships, bookings, rentals and birthday parties or summer events." Without these events to boost revenue, and with additional costs associated with cleaning and disinfecting, times are hard for many of WNY's cultural institutions.
The Buffalo and Erie County Naval & Military Park will begin the year already $150,000 in debt and will need to borrow money to stay open.

Both organizations have laid off staff in an effort to reduce costs.
