UB Football Head Coach Being Courted By Bigger School

The University of Buffalo men's football team is once again in the same position they were back in 2009.

Back then, the school lost its football head coach Turner Gill to a bigger school, The University of Kansas. Gill had turned the UB football program around and was offered the heading coaching job with Kansas, which he accepted.

Flash forward to 2021 and University of Buffalo officials are seeing the same scenario play out. According to the Kansas City Star, current UB head coach Lance Leipold is a front runner for the University of Kansas head coaching opening.

Leipold came to the University of Buffalo in 2015 after kicking off his coaching career with Division III Wisconsin-Whitewater where he had a career record of 109-6 while winning six national championships.

Since joining UB, Leipold has racked up a 37-33 overall record in his six-season with Buffalo. He led the Bulls to a 6-0 regular season last year during a COVD-19 shorten season. His only loss last season came in the MAC championship to Ball State.

UB ended the 2020 season ranked #25 in the AP poll.

Leipold did sign an extension with the University of Buffalo in February of 2020 that runs through 2024.

This is not the first time Leipold has been linked with a head coaching job at a bigger school. He interviewed for the Illinois opening in December of 2020. That job went to Bert Bielema. Leipold was also linked to the opening at Vanderbilt before that job was given to Clark Lea.

Once again the problem with winning is that bigger schools with more money come after your coaches. I guess that is a good problem to have.
