Trying to bounce back after a tough loss against the rival Patriots, the Buffalo Bills took a quick business trip to Los Angeles for a Week 5 matchup against the Rams. Josh Allen, James Cook, and the Bills offense looked to fix some issues they had in moving the ball and scoring against a big and tough Rams team that is led by future Hall of Famer Aaron Donald and NFL MVP Matthew Stafford .

The Bills got on the scoreboard first after an amazing game-opening kickoff return by Ray Davis, who took the ball 70 yards downfield to the 26-yard line. From there, the Bills were able to put three points up thanks to a 49-yard field goal Tyler Bass kicked. The Bills added another three points later in the first quarter when Bass kicked a second field goal, this one for 23 yards. James Cook added his first rushing touchdown of the game in the second quarter on a 17-yard scamper into the end zone.

While the Bills offense seemed to sputter a bit, the defense held up its end of the bargain by keeping Matt Stafford and the powerful Rams offense under lock and key for most of the first half.

The second half saw the Rams take the lead thanks to a touchdown from a Blake Corum scoring run. The Bills and Keon Coleman, however, would not take that lying down, and Number 0 took a beautiful 8-yard touchdown catch. The Bills were only able to take a 19-14 lead thanks to a false start penalty on the extra point, which contributed to Tyler Bass missing the kick on the next attempt.

As the fourth quarter kicked off, the Rams and Bills traded touchdowns, with Buffalo taking the lead on a one-yard scoring run from Josh Allen and the Buffalo Snowplow, who then added on a two-point conversion pass to Dalton Kincaid, giving the Bills a 27-20 lead.

A few drives later, the Bills and Rams traded touchdowns again with Stafford connecting with Devante Adams to tie the game at 27, before Josh Allen and James Cook powered the ball down the field, capping the drive off with Cook's second score of the game, giving Buffalo a 34-27 lead with less than 2 minutes left on the field. Not to be denied, reigning NFL MVP Matthew Stafford marched his team down the field right through the Buffalo defense on the ensuing drive to score a touchdown, tying the game again at 34, with less than 5 seconds on the clock.

With the game tied at the end of the fourth quarter, the game went into overtime, and the Bills took the extra-period kickoff. The hometown team was driving, but a second James Cook fumble gave the Rams the ball with around 8 minutes left in overtime. The Rams drove down the field for what seemed like it would be the game-winning field goal, but Greg Rousseau blocked the kick, giving the Bills offense one last chance.

Once back on offense, the Buffalo Bills and Josh Allen drove down the field to give Tyler Bass the opportunity to put the game away and get the win, which is exactly what he did on a great 45-yard kick.

While Buffalo won in the end, this game was marred by penalties on both sides of the ball. Both Los Angeles and Buffalo racked up offensive and defensive penalties. While both teams need to work on their on-field discipline, those missteps were almost the game-changer for Buffalo. However, now with this win in overtime, the Bills look forward to taking another road trip to Las Vegas to face the Raiders on Sunday, September 18, 2026.
