When You Can See The Full Pink Moon In WNY + Southern Ontario

The full moon is approaching for the month of April and this year it will happen on Tuesday, April 11th. The full moon in April is also known as the Pink Moon however, don't expect to see a particularly pink moon. The Pink Moon is not named for it's color but for the pink flower that blooms in the spring and can be found across US and Canada called the wild ground phlox.

The moon will be visible to those on the East Coast very late or very early, depending on how you look at the day. The "technical full phase" will happen at 2:08 am on Tuesday, but the "full moon" will be visible April 10th - April 12th.

Space.com explains why the name Pink Moon is used even though the color of the moon is not pink,

"According to the Old Farmer's Almanac, the April full moon is known as the Pink Moon because it marked the appearance of a flower called the moss pink, or phlox. That's likely a Native American tradition because phlox is common in North America and Siberia, as opposed to Europe. It is also called the Sprouting Grass Moon, the Egg Moon and the Fish Moon."

April is also known as good time to start planting crops and flowers. The Old Farmer's Almanac for 2017 says these dates in April that are perfect for planting, fishing and incubating eggs based on the moon's phases and signs.

For Planting:

• Aboveground crops: 3, 4, 30
• Belowground crops: 12, 13, 22, 23

For Setting (Incubating) Eggs:

• 9, 10, 18, 19

For Fishing:

• 1–11, 26–30

It's amazing what can be determined by what is going on in the sky. It really makes you think back to one's resourcefulness before Google and smartphones.
