New York State has been urging people to get electric cars, and now you can get some money back if you do.

New York is hoping to become greener in 2025

According to the New York State Energy Research & Development Authority, electric cars are cleaner, they offer a cutting-edge driving experience, save money on fuel, and require less maintenance than cars with gas or diesel engines.  A couple of years ago, they released a mandate that by 2035, all new vehicle sales will have to be zero-emission.

New York is passing on incentives to get it done

To make sure they hit their goal of 100% zero-emission vehicles being sold by 2035, they're offering a couple of incentives.  The first is a rebate that will happen at the point of sale.

The Drive Clean Rebate For Electric Cars

The first incentive is called the "Drive Clean Rebate for Electric Cars."  It's a rebate that will happen at the dealership where you buy your car.  The amount you will get back will depend on the mileage range of the vehicle and the manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) for that model.  So, the further your car goes on a single charge, the more you will get back.

  • Greater than 200-mile range: $2,000 rebate
  • 40- to 199-mile range: $1,000 rebate
  • Less than 40-mile range: $500 rebate
  • MSRP greater than $42,000: $500 rebate

The Inflation Reduction Act: Vehicles

The second incentive is tax credits through the Inflation Reduction Act.  Obviously, those tax credits can be claimed by the person who is buying the car when filing their tax returns, or they can transfer the IRA tax credit to a car dealership to reduce the upfront purchase price of a new or used EV.
