Hit and Run Leaves 1 Person Dead in Lockport, New York

There’s a bad accident that shut down a busy road in Lockport on Thursday morning.

Someone called into Clay & Company as they were driving down Rt. 78 on Thursday morning on their commute to work, but when they reached the area of Transit and Price, they were halted by the scene of an accident.

One person said they saw a body in the road that was "covered by some kind of tarp."

Nothing has been confirmed as of yet, but what we do know is that the road is currently shut down in that area of Lockport. 

I posted an inquiry on the Lockport News & Info Facebook page to see if there have been any updates on the accident, and some people are saying that a pedestrian was struck by a moving vehicle. 

One person in the Facebook group said the accident happened in front of the 2/4/5 snow shop, closer to the side that is on Nichols Street. 

Update as of 7:55 AM: The Lockport Police Department published a press release in regards to the accident on their Facebook page.

The Lockport Police Department called the accident a "fatal hit and run," and they are currently investigating the incident.

The Lockport Police Department was first notified of "a male lying in the roadway at South Transit Street at Nichols Street" at approximately 5:44 AM on Thursday.

The press release said:

"Upon arriving on scene, patrol found a male lying in the roadway deceased and the vehicles involved had since left the area. The driver of one of the vehicles has since been located, however the whereabouts of the vehicle/driver is unknown."

Local authorities are withholding the name of the deceased until they can notify next of kin.

Update as of 7:09 AM: Niagara Action Facebook page confirmed that there is in fact a deceased body in the vicinity of Lockport Plaza.

Update as of 6:50 AM: The road was initially blocked off between Willow and Nichols, but now it is closed between Willow and Price. It doesn’t look like the roads will be open anytime soon, and the local authorities may extend the road closures to encompass a larger area.

One bystander heard from local authorities that they wanted more roads blocked off because people are trying to drive all the way up to where the first responders are, and it is getting too close to the scene of the accident to care for the injured.

The person who was struck by a vehicle is still on the road and has not yet been moved as of 6:55 AM.
