The Buffalo Bills are the favorites to win the Super Bowl next season and it’s no secret as to the number one reason why…Josh Allen.

Allen has been a savior for the Bills franchise. Since he was picked 7th overall in the 2018 NFL Draft, the Bills have made the playoffs three of the past four seasons (three straight appearances), with two AFC East titles.

Allen’s now regarded as one of the top three quarterbacks in the NFL. It wasn’t always like that, however. April of 2018 featured many Bills fans upset at the draft pick, mostly due to the accuracy concerns and lack of domination at Wyoming in the Mountain West Conference.

Allen’s ascension to the top of the quarterback lists in the NFL was a textbook reason for why you draft for projection and potential. The Bills, along with quarterback guru Jordan Palmer, coached Allen to tweak his throwing motion and footwork. It’s incredible how he has retooled his game for the NFL level.

As it turns out, Allen was at the top of the Bills draft board, but they also would’ve been happy with one other quarterback in the 2018 NFL Draft.

According to Michael Silver and Bally Sports, general manager Brandon Beane had two quarterbacks at the top of his board; and was focused on getting one of them.

The other quarterback the Bills wanted, ranked just below Allen, was Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield.

Mayfield ended up going 1st overall to the Cleveland Browns, so the Bills had no shot at landing him.

Beane tried to make a trade for the Browns 4th overall pick (Bills held the 12th pick after the Cordy Glenn trade), and thought it might happen, until then GM John Dorsey upped his price and the talks ended.

The Bills tried to trade for the 5th overall pick with the Denver Broncos. GM John Elway said they would trade back unless a non-QB prospect they wanted was there. That player was there (edge rusher Bradley Chubb) and the deal never happened.

Luckily, the Bills got to pick 7 and traded with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers who got the Bills two second round picks. Originally, Tampa wanted pick 22 as well, but Beane refused.

In the end the Bills got their guy and are now Super Bowl favorites. It’s incredible to read that from Michael Silver though, because the planets had to align for that to happen. The Jets wanting Sam Darnold over Allen at pick 3 was another bullet dodged.
