The Buffalo Sabres had a chance to clinch a playoff spot for the first time since the 2010-11 season on Thursday but they fell just short against the Senators in Ottawa.

They were hoping to win tonight in Washington against the Capitals to clinch, but that result won't matter when it comes to Buffalo making the playoffs.

The Buffalo Sabres magic number is zero. The Sabres are officially in the NHL playoffs after the Detroit Red Wings lost to the New York Rangers on Saturday afternoon.

The Sabres currently are tied with the Tampa Bay Lightning for first place in the Atlantic Division and are battling with Tampa Bay and Carolina for 1st place overall in the Eastern Conference.

The Sabres are hoping to win tonight and their remaining games to secure a high seed in the NHL playoffs.

It had been the longest playoff drought in North American Pro Sports history. That drought streak now belongs to the New York Jets.
