May the 4th Be with you. That's what we all say on Star Wars Day, celebrated every May 4. The pun is precisely why it's celebrated on this day every year. While of course, it's not a major holiday that people get off work for, lots of fans go all out to dress up and celebrate every year. Some have movie marathons. Some make the trek to Star Wars World in Disney World, Orlando, Florida.
How Did Star Wars Day Begin?
It's a funny kind of story, actually, having to do with an election in the United Kingdom. As referenced on Wikipedia:
The first recorded reference of the phrase being used was on May 4, 1979, the day after Margaret Thatcherwas elected as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. Her political party, the Conservatives, placed a congratulatory advertisement in the London Evening News saying "May the Fourth Be with You, Maggie. Congratulations."
From there it continued to be a thing. It has especially become popular over the last 15 years with new movies and shows coming out reinvigorating fans and creating new ones.
