Bob Newhart is one of the greatest comic minds of our time, perfecting the roll of the stammering straight man long before Will Ferrell made it popular on Saturday Night Live. For younger readers, he's the guy who played Buddy's adopted father in Elf. You might also know him from the Librarian film series. But that would really be selling the comedian short.

Newhart was the first stand-up comedian to make a successful transistion to television and somehow was able to have two #1 sitcoms, The Bob Newhart Show and Newhart (Wonder how they came up with those names). He's 81 now and still performing stand-up and tomorrow he'll be at UB's Center for the Arts.

Anyone familiar with the work of Bob Newhart probably has a mental image of how a phone conversation with him will start: with his classic hesitant, slightly stammered "Hello?"
