Cuomo Signs New Law That Requires Adults To Wear Seat Belts In Back Seats

Adults can no longer choose to wear seat belts in the back seats of vehicles here in New York State.

According to WIVB, Governor Andrew Cuomo has signed a new law that will require adults to wear seat belts in the back seats of vehicles.

The new bill states that:

“No person sixteen years of age or over shall be a passenger in the back seat of a motor vehicle, unless such person is restrained by a safety belt.”

Before, those under the age of 16 needed to wear a seat belt in the back seat of a vehicle.

“We’ve known for decades that seat belts save lives and with this measure, we are further strengthening our laws and helping to prevent needless tragedies,” Gov. Cuomo said in a press release.

Back in 1984, New York became the first state to pass a seat belt law under Mario Cuomo (Andrew's father).

The new law goes into effect on November 1st.
