As the dog days of summer drag on in Western New York, there has been something in the news a whole lot lately that has been causing quite the stir all over the region.

While no one wants to think about it, we've heard quite a bit about bats lately. We've heard so much about bats over the last few weeks; it begs the question:

Is Western New York Being Overrun By Bats?

While bats have been in the news a lot lately with the animals taking up residence in people's bedrooms and multiple bats being found with rabies, the simple answer is no, WNY has not gone to the birds bats.

It may make a lot of news when it happens, but the activities that our local bat population has been undertaking are quite normal, according to the Bat Conservation Trust.

The local bat population, which consists of up to nine different bat species, has actually been in a bit of trouble lately. Different bacterial diseases have been impacting bat populations around the region, causing declines in the northern long-eared bat and other species.

Regardless of what's happening with local bat populations, it's important that you protect yourself and take steps to keep the people around you and your animals safe.
