The warm weather in Buffalo and Western New York doesn't seem to last long, so it's super important to make sure you make the most of the summer. And what an amazing summer we had, there were all kinds of great shows, events, and concerts, with even more on the horizon. We got to spend the days scratching things off of our summer bucket list, all while finding more activities to do.

Now, while summer is officially still here for a few weeks, Labor Day weekend is when a lot of people are ready to wind down summer and get ready for fall and eventually winter.

So, exactly what is Labor Day and how do people in the 716 celebrate it? I asked this exact question on Facebook and some of your answers were surprising, to say the least.

What Is Labor Day?

According to the US Department of Labor, Labor Day is a day set aside to honor the labor movement in the United States.

Observed the first Monday in September, Labor Day is an annual celebration of the social and economic achievements of American workers. The holiday is rooted in the late nineteenth century, when labor activists pushed for a federal holiday to recognize the many contributions workers have made to America’s strength, prosperity, and well-being.

The holiday has been celebrated in some form since the early 1880s, eventually becoming an official federal holiday in 1894 after President Grover Cleveland, a homegrown Buffalonian, signed it into law.

In practice, many Americans commemorate the day with traveling, family gatherings, BBQs, and taking advantage of sales offered at different retail locations.
