Thunder Storms Knocks Out Power To Thousands In Western New York

The saying goes typically April Showers, Bring May Flowers, however, Buffalo weather has been anything but typical over the last year, so it's not surprising this the first set of significant rain showers we've received this April has brought something a lot less enjoyable than flowers for May.

Severe Thunderstorms Roll Into Buffalo Area

Buffalo and Western New York have had a few days of near-perfect weather. Both Friday, April 14, 2023, and Saturday, April 15, 2023, brought lots of sun and very warm temperatures which allowed lots of people to get outside and enjoy themselves without the fear of snow and ice.

That amazing weather also ran into Sunday as a new record high temperature in Buffalo was set for the day.

That, of course, was before some pretty severe rainstorms began to blow into the area.

Thousands Without Power In WNY

Powerful thunderstorms bombarded several neighborhoods in Western New York, with reports of trees being down and electricity being knocked out in multiple areas.

At the peak, more than 7,000 New York State Electric and Gas customers in Erie, Niagara, and Cattaraugus counties were without power.

While National Grid has reports of nearly 2,000 customers being without power in Chautauqua and Erie Counties.

Officials from both power companies have reported that utility workers have been working throughout the night to restore power to everyone, but have been hampered by the rain and winds.

It's estimated that power will be restored to everyone before the end of the day.
