New Design Options for Buffalo's Scajaquada Expressway Available

Stakeholders and officials in Buffalo have been on a roll lately in announcements that will have a long-term impact on improving the City of Buffalo and the people who call it home.

The Greater Buffalo Niagara Regional Transportation Council (GBNRTC) held a public meeting at Buffalo State College on Wednesday, May 4, 2022, to unveil potential redesign options for the Scajaquada Expressway and the process of transforming it back to Scajaquada Parkway.

As someone who lives in an area of North Buffalo that isn't too far from the Scajaquada Expressway, this is great news for people like me and my neighbors who firmly believe that the creation of the Scajaquada Expressway is one of the dumbest things that Buffalo has ever done. The Scajaquada Expressway routinely ranks as one of the worst highways in New York State.

During the public meeting, officials from the GBNRTC went over the 4 potential options, or scenarios, for what to do with the Scajaquada Expressway:

Partial Removing the Expressway Removal,
Fully Removing the Expressway,
Replacing the Expressway with an At-Grade Roadway, and
Doing Nothing, Leaving the Status Quo

Stakeholders are seeking comments from residents of the area and the general public about what option should be taken.

In my view, there are positive benefits to all of the options except for leaving the Scajaquada Expressway as it is. It was a terrible idea to tear up the original Delaware Park and Humboldt to build this expressway. It was ultimately one of the catalysts of the suburbanization of the Buffalo area and left some permanent scars on our city.
